A university Don and first female professor of Quantity Surveying in Africa, Professor Bola Babalola has urged the Federal Government of Nigeria to learn from the management of the Federal Polytechnic, Ilaro on gender equality in the area of distribution of positions of authority.
Speaking as the Chairman of the 1st Women in Technical Education (WITED) Conference in Ilaro, Professor Babalola commended the institution’s Rector, Arc(Dr) Olusegun Aluko for reflecting gender equality in the administration of the polytechnic.
According to her, “I think the Federal Government should borrow a leaf from the Federal Polytechnic, Ilaro on how to be gender friendly when it comes to holding key offices in Nigeria.
She however showed her displeasure to the lopsidedness of the government in the recent ministerial list to the National Assembly where out of the 47 nominees, only 7 were females.
Speaking on the abilities of women, Professor Babalola reiterated that women are strong, competent and even doing better in some cases than their male counterpart. She therefore enjoined women to perform in any position they may find themselves, saying, ” men will allow us to do it when they see performance.
Earlier in his speech, the Rector of the polytechnic, Dr. Aluko thanked WITED for bringing the conference to Ilaro, promising them of the institution’s support as well as their safety throughout their stay occasioned by the peaceful nature of Ilaro township and it’s environs.
The maiden edition of WITED conference taking place at the Federal Polytechnic,, Ilaro coincides with the 40th anniversary celebration of the institution coming up in October, later this year.
