The Federal Government of Nigeria, on Wednesday, announced most Nigerian marital unions “illicit” as just 314 worshipping centres have certified permits to join together under the statutory Marriage Act.
Talking at a one-day partners’ meeting on the issues of statutory relational unions in line with the Marriage Act Cap, M6, LFN 2004 as corrected, the permanent Secretary, Ministry of interior, Barr. Georgina E. Ehuriah, uncovered that just around 4, 689 authorized place of worship in Nigeria have registered with the Ministry , but only 314 have updated and renews their licenses
She said “At present, just around 4, 689 authorized spots of worshipping in Nigeria have refreshed their records with the Ministry of Interior, of which just 314 have renewed their licenses.
“The implication of this is that marriages conducted in unlicensed places of worship are not in line with the Marriage Act and cannot serve legal purposes when the need arises, and such unlicensed places of worship are operating contrary to Section 6(1) of the Marriage Act.”
Barr. Georgina further unveiled that the Ministry of Interior as of now has a database for all registered worship centres and a checklist database for unlicenced centres.
