Nigeria’s Super Eagles ambition to win the 3rd Afcon championship came to an abrupt end with a shock 1-2 loss to the Desert foxes of Algeria in the semi final match played last night in Cairo, Egypt.

A Troose-Ekong own goal gave the Algerians the needed lead in the first half of the game before Nigeria’s China import and the highest goal scorer of the tournament so fat, Odion Ighalo equalised for the Eagles through a penalty.

The match which exposed the weakness of eagles saw the foxes dominating the game by firing from all cylinders. Eagles defence was restless as the Algerians tormented the defence through their Manchester City star man, Riyhad Mahrez.

Luck however ran out the Eagles when a foul was committed at the edge of 18 yard box in the dying minutes of the game after few minutes after an Algerian effort hit the woodwork. Talisman Mahrez stood tall to convert the free kick dashing any hope of Eagles comeback.

Nigerians have been reacting to Eagles loss from different angles. While many believed the team was beaten hands down, others feel, the goalkeeper, Dan Akpeyi was the main problem of the team.

Our correspondent who visited one of the viewing centres in Abeokuta discovered that most Nigerians were dejected about the loss, calling on the Nigeria Football Federation to do away with the green Jersey which according to them, brings bad luck to our teams generally.

Nigeria now face another North African team, Tunisia who was earlier edged out by Senegal through an own goal after a pulsating encounter. While Algeria and Senegal square up to play in the final.
