The recent suspension of all the Local Government Chairmen in Ogun state by the House of Assembly has been described as testing of powers and acting under certain instructions.
This statement was made by Barrister Steve while featuring on the monthly online discussion programme,,”Ink Table”.
Barrister Steve who observed that the Assembly is only being naive supposed to have invited the chairmen for questioning before being suspended.
In his own contribution, Barrister Akin Abibu faulted the action of the House over a constituted authority in respect of Local Government.
Barrister Abibu pointed out that the control of LG is not within the power of individuals and as such must be allowed to function as a different tier of government.
According to him, ” I believe the tenure of the duly elected officials is regulated by the law and it is not subject to the whims of anyone, not even the legislature”.
On the issue of invitation to appear before the legislators. Barrister Steve stated further that it was an act of putting the cart before the horse. He however faulted the house for suspending the Chairmen before inviting them for questioning.
On if the suspension is later turned to dissolution, He advised that the suspended chairmen can seek a redress in the court of law as the legislators do not have the power to remove democratically official from office.
